NOTICE: To reduce air congestion, the Nepal government has rerouted most Lukla flights from Kathmandu to Ramechhap Airport in 2019, which is located 130 km (a five-hour drive) from Kathmandu. While these flights are generally reliable, mountain weather is highly unpredictable and can cause cancellations year-round. Travelers should include contingency days in their itineraries to account for potential delays. Alternatively, paid helicopter flights between Kathmandu and Lukla remain available if regular plane service is disrupted. Please be informed about the alternatives to Lukla flight cancellations.
In Kathmandu you will be staying in standard hotels for 3 nights in Thamel, the tourist hub in Kathmandu. During the trek, you will be staying in the family run teahouse lodges with basic facilities. In lower altitudes rooms will be with attached bathrooms and higher up after Namche it will be mostly shared toilets with one or two other rooms. All accommodation are on twin share basis and you have the options to choose private room or upgrade your accommodation in Kathmandu and while on the trek for an additional cost during the booking process.
In Kathmandu breakfast will be in the hotels where you stay. During the trek you will have freshly cooked foods such as pasta, tuna bakes, noodles, potatoes, eggs, daal bhat (rice and lentils), bread, soup and fresh vegetables. You may find meat items but we do not suggest eating meat as they might have been carried by porter or yak from lower altitude without refrigeration. Breakfast and dinner will be in the tea houses where you stay and the lunch will be on the way during the day. In Kathmandu welcome and farewell dinners in a traditional Nepalese restaurant.
The spring time from March to May and the Autumn months from September to November is considered the best months for Everest Base Camp Trek.
Anyone who is fit and healthy and have a habit of walking for few hours a day can do this trek. However walking in higher altitudes on rough trails and stone stairs is more physically demanding than walking in lower altitudes and on some days you will have to walk for 10 hours. Aerobic exercise and jogging regularly prior to the trip is recommended to enhance your stamina. Eve Holidays provides the Everest Base Camp trek training guideline and guide you fully to get ready and confident for the trek. Participants with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart, lungs and blood diseases are required to consult their doctor before taking the trip. Eve Holidays organizes small group trip departures, we would suggest booking a solo private trek with us if you think you will need longer hours to cover the same distance and cannot keep up with the group.
All of Eve Holidays trekking itineraries are planned keeping in mind the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Going up at higher altitude too fast causes a medical condition called AMS which is serious enough to kill if neglected. We are well aware that it is essential to allow you sufficient time for acclimatization to minimize the risk. However it is important to remember that some people are more vulnerable than others. So we suggest to avoid alcohol and drink enough water and get good night sleep during the trek.
The direct round-trip distance from Lukla to Everest Base Camp and back is 113 kilometers (70.2 miles). However, the optional side hikes taken during the acclimatization days such as hiking to the Everest View Hotel on Day 4 and climbing Nangkartshang Peak on Day 7, trekkers cover a total walking distance of roughly 130 kilometers (80.7 miles) in total.
The trek is classified as moderately difficult. It does not require technical climbing skills, ropes, or ice axes; it is a purely non-technical scenic hike. However, it requires excellent cardiovascular stamina and physical fitness. You will be trekking uphill on rugged, steep, rocky, and uneven terrain for 5 to 8 hours a day while carrying a daypack in thinning air.
You should begin a dedicated physical training program at least 8 to 12 weeks before your trip. Focus heavily on cardiovascular training by running, swimming, cycling, or using a stair climber. The most effective training is walking on inclined treadmills or hiking local trails while wearing a weighted backpack. Incorporate leg-strengthening exercises like squats, lunges, and calf raises to prepare your joints for long alpine descents.
Yes, beginners can successfully complete this trek provided they are in excellent physical condition, have prepared with proper cardio training, and choose a reputable trekking agency that enforces a slow pacing strategy and proper acclimatization schedules. Prior multi-day hiking experience is recommended but not mandatory.
Teahouses are rustic mountain lodges with twin-sharing wooden bedrooms. The bedrooms do not have heating, meaning they get very cold at night. However, the large communal dining hall is heated every evening using a central potbelly stove fueled by dried yak dung, creating a warm and cozy space to eat, socialize, and relax.
Most teahouses along the Everest Base Camp trail use Type C, Type D, and Type M electrical outlets. The standard voltage in Nepal is 230V with a frequency of 50Hz. To ensure you can charge your devices everywhere, it is highly recommended to pack a universal travel adapter. Since teahouses charge an hourly fee (ranging from $2 to $6 USD) to plug devices into the communal dining hall outlets, bringing a high-capacity power bank (20,000mAh or higher) is the smartest way to keep your phone and camera batteries full while saving money
No, tap water in the mountains is not safe to drink for travelers. To stay safely hydrated, you can purchase boiled water from teahouses or bring your own reusable water bottles equipped with water purification tablets or a high-quality filtration system (like a Sawyer Squeeze or LifeStraw). We actively discourage buying single-use plastic water bottles to prevent pollution in the national park.
Cell phone coverage via local SIM cards (Ncell and NTC) works reasonably well in Kathmandu, Lukla, and Namche Bazaar, but becomes bit unreliable as you approach the high glaciers. For reliable internet connectivity, you can purchase data packages of Everest Link. Their prepaid Wi-Fi cards are widely available at teahouses along the EBC route, costing $5-$10 for 1GB, $20-$30 for 10GB-20GB valid for 30 days. Alternatively, some lower villages sell daily per-device access for $6-$10.
Yes, you can pay a single supplement fee to secure a private room in Kathmandu and at the lower-altitude lodges. However, please note that at very high altitudes (such as Lobuche and Gorakshep), lodge space is extremely limited. During peak trekking seasons, rooms may have to be shared regardless of a single supplement payment.
You will walk an average of 5 to 8 hours per day depending on the section, covering rugged, steep, rocky, and uneven alpine terrain. The daily pace is intentionally slow and steady to allow your body to naturally acclimatize to the rising altitude.
To ensure ethical working conditions, our porters carry a maximum weight limit of 20 to 25 kilograms, usually carrying the duffel bags of two trekkers. You only need to carry a lightweight 30L daily daypack containing your absolute essentials, such as water, camera, rain jacket, fleece layer, sun protection, and personal medications.
The trekking year is split into two distinct peak seasons that offer the best weather windows: Spring (March to May): Offers warmer temperatures, beautiful blooming rhododendron forests, clear morning skies, and the chance to see active, colorful Everest expedition tents at Base Camp. Autumn (September to November): Offers the crispest, clearest blue skies, exceptional mountain visibility, stable weather conditions, and colder, sharper nights.
Winter (December to February): It is possible but challenging. Temperatures plunge well below freezing (down to -20°C/-4°F at high altitudes), many high-altitude lodges close, and trails can be blocked by heavy snow. Monsoon (June to August): This season is highly discouraged. Heavy rains cause frequent flight cancellations to Lukla, muddy trails, landslides, a lack of mountain views, and active leeches in the lower forest zones.
Temperatures drop progressively lower as you ascend in altitude. At lower elevations like Lukla and Namche Bazaar, daytime temperatures range from 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F). At high-altitude stops like Gorak Shep, daytime temperatures hover near freezing, and nighttime temperatures routinely drop between -10°C to -20°C (14°F to -4°F). Teahouse bedrooms are unheated, making a high-quality cold-weather sleeping bag mandatory.
While your main accommodation and meals are covered in our package, you should budget roughly $20 to $35 USD per day in local Nepali Rupees (NPR). This cash will cover personal expenses such as hot showers, device charging, Wi-Fi cards, bottled water, snacks, toilet paper, and tipping your guiding team at the end of the journey.
There are ATMs in Lukla and Namche Bazaar (3,440m), but they are notoriously unreliable due to power outages and network failures. Once you trek past Namche Bazaar, there are no ATMs at all. You must withdraw all the cash you need in Nepali Rupees while you are in Kathmandu.

The trip to Everest Base Camp we did with Eve Holidays was an amazing experience. We visited different cultural sites in Kathmandu with our guide Gyanu and then flew to Lukla for Everest trek. We had a very friendly and experienced female guide, Sabhyate in the mountains. Having female trekking guide in the remote mountains was much safe and comfortable for us. After the trek we had a Nepalese dinner watching cultural dance in Kathmandu. Thanks to Maina for Everything!
We group of four friends had been planning for Nepal trip since last year. I must say from the very first inquiry email till the last day of our trip we were very much impressed with the service of the company. Everything was perfect and more than we expected. We are very happy that all four us did the 15 days Everest Base Camp Trek without any hassle. It was all possible due to good team work of this company especially our guide Sudhir who knew the region very well and was very good at showing us every side of Nepal. We would like to visit Nepal again probably in 2020 for Annapurna trek and would off course travel with this company.
